Franklin is seeking artists between the ages of 17 and 35, says publicist Tracey Jordan.
Prospective artists can send a CD, DVD or cassette of a cover song performance (“original material will not be reviewed,” Franklin advises), with full name and contact details on the disc or tape, and a labeled spine. She also wants a recent 8-by-10 photo and a short bio that includes musical background.
Submissions must be in a “regular sized case” and can be mailed to:

HERE'S SOME HELPFUL INFORMATION ABOUT THE OWNER OF THEARTISTMAP.NET - JOHN MANDEVILLE
John Mandeville is one of Christian music’s most acclaimed songwriters and producers, writing and producing hits for artists such as Avalon, 4HIM, Point of Grace, and Tammy Trent, among others. Prior to his 2009 solo hit “Glorify,” Mandeville was awarded six certified Gold Records, wrote multiple #1 songs, and was nominated for three Dove Awards for Song of the Year with “Jesus Will Still Be There,” which was included in CCM Magazine’s 100 Greatest Songs in Christian Music.
After several years of silence, 2009 marked the beginning of a solid new relationship with radio and the music scene for solo artist/songwriter/producer John Mandeville, and his I.P.O. Records indie imprint. Mandeville found a strong show of support at radio for his debut single "Glorify". In the States, this first single from his solo debut titled We Belong To Heaven spent 14 weeks in the Top 10, climbing to #2 on the U.S. Billboard Soft A/C charts. "Glorify" ended the year as one of Christian Music Weekly’s Inspirational Top 10 songs in 2009. "Glorify" also found a solid home in the Top 5 on the 2009 Latin CCM charts, where it stayed for more than four months – in English. Go figure. The video single for "Glorify" also aired on all major Christian Music video shows including JCTV, Gospel Music Channel and Daystar TV.
As the 2009 year closed, Mandeville’s debut project We Belong To Heaven was honored with an Independent Music Awards nomination for Contemporary Christian Album of the year, which he later won at the turn of 2010. The 2009 Holiday season brought John another unexpected gift – his second Top 5 single for the year. Mandeville’s first Christmas single, "Christmas Is You", found immediate support, climbing to #3 in only four weeks on Christian Music Weekly’s 2009 Christmas Chart; soaring among 200+ current Christmas singles.
With all of this in motion at the close of 2011, Mandeville’s I.P.O. Records imprint will be offering the Artist Map process to a growing number of artists and bands in development, through the launch of The Artist Map Community on 11.1.11. It looks like this might be his busiest year yet. Whether you're an emerging artist or positive music fan, get your Free Account during the Beta Launch this month at www.theartistmap.net.

A MEMBER OF THE MOTOWN SINGING GROUP 'THE ORIGINALS' WALTER GAINES IS DEAD.
Gaines died at 7:15am Tuesday morning in Glendale, California with his wife Barbara Gaines by his side. He had been suffering from a long lasting illness, and even while doing that he still found time to perform with his group periodically throughout the years. Gaines along with founding members Freddie Gorman, C.P. Spencer and Hank Dixon lit up the charts when they join with Marvin Gaye as their producer and writer to sing the #1 R&B 1969 hit "Baby I'm For Real", which by the way also won them their first gold record from RIAA.
Compared to other Motown stars the group were late comers in the Motown bandwagon of hit makers; they started off as background singers for many of the Motown artists of the time.
The following year In 1970, "The Bell" struck the top 10 R&B charts at #4. Walter and the group was on a roll with back to back hit songs.
Many people thought it all stopped there for the majic voiced Motown group, but they continued to make the top 20 R&B listing that same year with songs such as "We Can Make It Baby"(R&B #20- 1970), "I Like Your Style"(R&B #20- 1970), and "God Bless Whoever Sent You"(R&B #14- 1970).
The group didn't stop there; In 1976 they hit #1 on the dance charts with "Down to Love Town" (#1 Dance Charts), and the following year in 1977 they climbed the top 10 dance charts with "Call on Your Six-Million Dollar Man" (1976 — #6 dance charts). Gaines was loved and will be missed by all of the Motown celebrities and friends that knew him. No funeral information has yet been announced. We will have that information as soon as it's available.

Dear MAA Members,
Subject: MAA AND THE COMMUNITY OF DETROIT
The Motown Alumni Association's primary effort is to bridge the community networking opportunities in Detroit as it relates to the performing arts and entertainment. As we work with the Virgil H. Carr Cultural Arts Center in the coming year, we are dedicated to building strong relationships with the entrepreneurship of the community, along with helping VHCC to expand it's cultural education based curriculum's. We do admit that the MAA has been very independent for 16 years, and is not use to joining forces on such an intimate level, but the MAA is ready for the challenge to assist the Virgil H. Carr Cultural Arts Center to become the world class facility it is already becoming. In building our relationship with the facility, we will propose the following programs that have already been a part of the MAA infrastructure both currently and through out the years, We hopes that our prospectus can find their way into the groundwork of the Carr Centers activities:
* Lifevision 3D exhibit (3D without glasses) joined with Wayne State University Technical Engineering Department
* MAA In The School Program - (MAA goes into the schools to set up inspiration based programming to encourage children to stay in school.)
* The MAA "Read A Story" Program (Pre-school to 2nd grade school children come to the Carr facility to listen to a music celebrity read a story.)
* Motown Lecture Series (Motown stars and other celebrity personalities speak to audiences about their life with Motown and the industry, with your host Billy Wilson President of the Motown Alumni Association.)
* MAA Record Industry Workshops
* Motown Legends and Music Tributes series ([produced by DBMA Productions (Detroit Black Music Awards) - Misty Love])
* Motown Artists "Unplugged" Music Series
* MAA Music Competition
* MAA Journalism (Secondary school children research and Interview Motown starts for their school newsletters or classes).
* The licensing of the development of US Postal Stamps for various celebrities and popular personalities in Michigan.

Will the land mind Eminem court ruling that the Motown Alumni Association was involved with also, cause the music industry to implode?
MAA Editorial - I think the music industry needs to take their fingers out of their back side, and deal with this digital issue directly. Even though today's artists are raking in more money than any other artists in history, the idea that you have more money than lawsuits can exist is obviously the mentality of an inexperienced executive or one dump drunk!
Sure, the lower level executive have a BUDGET, If all you have to do is sign the check and give it to your employee's, it's obvious you don't have a clue about what top level management is going through to keep those checks going. And, sure the top level is looking at the bank account, but they obviously think there will be enough money the next day to compensate for the millions they lost through frivolous lawsuits. If you need advice on such workings, ask a former lawyer of these major companies on the win/ lose ratio of a record label back when they were working for the company, then ask Universal on their win/lose ratio TODAY!
In fact, you don't have to ask them anything, just look in the industry new and trade magazines, they tell everything about everybody tax records, who quit or was fired, or even who lost the most revenue in that year.
Universal is the best recent example; when all of your biggest executives jump ship and go to another major label, mutiny in the bounty multiplies on a label if the company is dubious.
When you can see the hole in the ship, it is better to jump and take your chances else where than go down with the ship with the captain. What good is it to join the captain if you are DEAD!
You won't get a raise in salary or live to see another day...SCREW MARTYRDOM, we see how that works in the middle east.
The high executives at Universal got the heck out of there before they became the cape goat and got fired for something they didn't do or see coming!
The digital age is here, we all have to grasp a hold of reality. Here's an interesting thought:
when was the last time you seen someone with a CD player? Yes, we still use CD's in car's and even have them at home gathering dust, but the fact is, MP3 players and Cell phones are the current crave for listening to music now days. Downloading is the wave of NOW... trading songs from Bluetooth to Bluetooth is the way to go in the 21st century; and if the record company executive are not going to adopt to the future (and the future is now) they need to take their antiquated ideas and join a club that would appreciate the times of yesterday. Thousands of them do exist and they are the driving force to the new age of yesterdays music industry.
It's not that people don't see what's happening, its that they don't want to make the changes that cause change to happen!
The 21st century flipped our "old thinking" mental script. We are not just a few years into the millennium, we are over a decade into it.
During the flip of every century, major changes were made into mankind; we just happen to be still living during the flip!
We know what the revolutionary war people felt when America was leading into a new Constitution of Independence in 1800, or the industrial age in 1900. Now it the computer age in 2000, with the Internet leading the path to communication and social networking. Everybody thinks they know something now, when in fact, you can know one component of a situation, but as usual, there is another component that will always stomp you, and you have to go find help. The record business needs help, they are at the wall and don't quite know how to get around it easily. It's not that they are not adopting, it's that they are not adopting quick enough. I might be wrong about this, but when the top (and I do mean top) major executives from the biggest record company in the world jumps ship to go to the second largest record company... what does that say about the structure of the biggest record company in the world? I'm not player hating, I'm just stressing the facts. By the way, I didn't mention the executive for a reason, there's a point that I was making and their names were unimportant to that point.

EMI DEFAULT IN LOANS, SELLS FOR 4.1 BILLION
reported by: NewYork Times
EMI Is Sold for $4.1 Billion in Combined Deals, Consolidating the Music Industry By BEN SISARIO EMI, the venerable music company that is home to the Beatles, the Beach Boys and the Motown song catalog, has been sold for $4.1 billion through a pair of deals that usher in a new wave of consolidation in the music industry.
In a complex sale brokered by Citigroup, the Universal Music Group, a division of the French conglomerate Vivendi, will absorb EMI's recorded music operations for $1.9 billion, while EMI's music publishing division will be sold for $2.2 billion to a consortium of investors led by Sony, the companies announced on Friday.
Besides the Beatles, music's biggest trophy, EMI's recorded music assets include Pink Floyd, Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra's middle period and current stars like Katy Perry and Coldplay. Its labels include Capitol, Virgin and Blue Note.
The sales ended a four-month auction that was slowed by the instability of the international credit markets. Yet prices were higher than many in the music industry and on Wall Street had expected, helping Citi to recoup some of the $5.5 billion it had lent four years ago as part of a disastrous private equity takeover of the label.
The split of EMI completes the biggest shift in music's corporate structure in almost a decade, reducing the number of major record companies from four to three and allowing Sony and Universal, already the biggest forces in music, to become even bigger.
With Universal and Sony now far outweighing the third major, the Warner Music Group, the competitive landscape of the industry is expected to shift. Warner, which was sold for $3.3 billion in May to the Russian-born investor Len Blavatnik, had offered about $1.5 billion for EMI but dropped out of the bidding two weeks ago over a disagreement about the price.
"From a competitive standpoint it would have been better for the industry if Warner and EMI had merged," said Jeffrey Rabhan, the chairman of the Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music at New York University and an artist manager. "You want to have three strong players, not two and a half."
Universal and Sony's deals for EMI will be subject to regulatory
approvals, and Universal - which already controls about 30 percent of the music sold around the world - may face close scrutiny in Europe. EMI's market share for recorded music is about 9 percent.
EMI, a British company with roots dating to 1887, has been in financial turmoil since 2007 when Terra Firma, a private equity firm, bought it for $8.4 billion using the $5.5 billion loan from Citi. The bank seized EMI in February after the label defaulted on the loan.
Lucian Grainge, the chairman of Universal, pledged to preserve the British identity of EMI.
"For me, as an Englishman, EMI was the preeminent music company that I grew up with," Mr. Grainge said in a statement. "Its artists and their music provided the soundtrack to my teenage years. Therefore, U.M.G. is committed to both preserving EMI's cultural heritage and artistic diversity and also investing in its artists and people to grow the company's assets for the future."
In their most recent annual reports, Universal had just under $6 billion in revenue last year, Sony's music operations $5.7 billion and Warner $3 billion. EMI's recorded operations had $1.8 billion in revenue and its publishing side $749 million for the year ended March 2010, the last period for which it reported accounts.
Universal said it would finance the deal with its existing credit lines. In apparent anticipation of antitrust challenges, the company said it would sell $680 million in "non-core assets." When it bought the BMG publishing catalog in 2007, Universal had to sell more than $100 million in assets to secure the approval of the European Commission.
Sony's bid was financed by a hodgepodge of investors including Blackstone's GSO Capital Partners unit; Mubadala, the investment arm of Abu Dhabi; Jynwel Capital, from Malaysia; and the media mogul David Geffen. The group was corralled by Robert Wiesenthal, chief financial officer of the Sony Corporation of America. (Music publishing, separate
from recorded music, concerns the copyrights for the music and lyrics that underlie every recording.)
Sony's $325 million investment gives it a minority stake in the venture, which will keep the EMI name. It will be run as an independent unit within Sony by Sony/ATV, the publishing company owned by Sony and the estate of Michael Jackson. "It has been a long process, but something that people have viewed as difficult - the problems in the financial markets - ended up accruing to our benefit," Mr. Wiesenthal said. "We
found long-term investors, who are not just looking at the short-term returns typical of private equity."
The Sony deal also reunites Martin Bandier, Sony/ATV's chief executive, with EMI's publishing division, which he had built into the industry's leader before he left in 2007. Among the 1.3 million songs controlled by EMI are a catalog of thousands of Motown songs, and it also has deals with many current R.& B. and pop songwriters like Alicia Keys and Kanye West.
Some analysts said the disruptions in the music business over the last decade mean that the labels must now justify themselves to generations of artists who have learned to do without them.
"Even with the very large catalogs that these two labels will not have big chunks of, it's still going to be an interesting challenge to see how they remake themselves in the 21st century," said Mike McGuire, a media analyst at Gartner. "So many options are available to artists now that the labels are going to have to show, more than ever, their value as this gigantic entity."

MICHAEL JACKSON'S DOCTOR FOUND GUILTY!!!!!!
reported By: Lisa de Moraes (Washington Post)
A jury found cardiologist Conrad Murray guilty of involuntary manslaughter Monday afternoon in the death of pop star Michael Jackson, and Headline News was there to do what it does best: hootin’ and hollerin’.
“Conrad Murray in handcuffs in the courtroom!” HLN show host Vinnie Politan shrieked when the verdict was read in the Los Angeles courtroom. “Making the transition from doctor to convicted killer! There goes Conrad Murray. . . .
Conrad Murray faces four years in prison and the loss of his medical license.
Dr. Conrad Murray was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in Michael Jackson's death in June 2009. (Nov. 7)“He was free all through this trial — he’s no longer free. There are the cuffs! Dr. Conrad Murray is the man who killed Michael Jackson!” concluded Politan, host of HLN’s “Prime News.”
“On my deathbed, I will remember — this is one of the moments that will flash before my eyes,” HLN’s Jane Velez-Mitchell vowed, seconds before the verdict was read.
Sadly, HLN had to muddle through — before, during and after the verdict — without its High Priestess of Hootin’ and Hollerin’, Nancy Grace, who was busy rehearsing a jive for Monday night’s live “Dancing With the Stars.” In her absence, Velez-Mitchell — her regular guest host — bravely soldiered on:
“Incredible intensity — unbelievable scene: People praying, crying, hugging,” Velez-Mitchell emoted from the “crush of humanity” outside the courtroom.
“A woman fainted a while ago and had to be taken away by ambulance. Oh my gosh! There’s a baby in there. . . . This is a crush for the child,” Velez-Mitchell told the mother, who was jumping up and down happily, clutching her infant at her chest. “I really suggest you have your child moved,” she told Mom, who smiled for the camera and ignored the advice.
Velez-Mitchell moved on. She had a job to do: turning over her microphone to one Sheila, who, the host explained, has been there during the trial. “I’m so happy. I just thank God we have justice today!” Sheila exclaimed.
“We’re so happy about the handcuffs,” chimed in a Pasadena blonde dressed in large designer sunglasses and houndstooth-check car coat.
“I don’t even know what to say, I’m so thankful. It’s such a release of emotion. The man needed to go to jail and he’s on his way! Yes! Yes! Yes!” shouted someone named Patty.
“Kudos to the prosecution,” Pasadena Blonde added, giving credit where credit was due.
“Will there be justice for The World’s Most Famous Man?” Politan wondered before Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor entered and the show began.
“Think about Paris. Think about Blanket,” Politan said, referring to Jackson’s kids. “Think about Prince William,” he added. Still talking about Jackson’s heirs.
The judge had instructed those in the room to remain silent as the verdict was read, but La Toya Jackson — who made a dramatically late Loretta Young entrance at the courthouse after tweeting, “I’m on my way — I’m shaking uncontrollably!” — was heard to let out a squeal. But La Toya put a lid on it when the room erupted with a loud “Shhhhh!”
After the verdict was read, Velez-Mitchell struggled to buttonhole a Jackson relative as the family exited the courthouse. She tried but failed to catch Jackson’s parents, Katherine and Joe, but she did land brother Randy, who leaned into the crush of humanity to tell her, “Justice was served.” But he had issues with the length of the possible sentence as he added: “Michael was with us.”
“Michael is with us — you just heard that!” Velez-Mitchell reported. “From the family! Stopping to talk to us. . . . There are smiles — but there is no gloating.”
Velez-Mitchell cast her net again, this time snaring Jackson’s sister Rebbie. “Nothing will bring him back, but I’m glad [Murray] was found guilty,” Rebbie confided.
“Not that it will bring Michael Jackson back,” Velez-Mitchell reported. “But the family is clearly jubilant.”
Monday was the second day of deliberations. The jury deliberated for about six hours Friday and for less than three hours Monday before buzzing three times from the deliberation room, indicating it had reached a unanimous verdict.
Murray, who is scheduled to be sentenced Nov. 29, was led from the courtroom minutes after the verdict was read. He could be sentenced to as much as four years in prison, as well as lose his medical license.
Jurors decided that Murray caused Jackson’s death in June 2009 when he administered the anesthetic propofol to the pop star at his home without then supervising his patient or taking appropriate action when Jackson stopped breathing.
Murray had said he was out of the room when Jackson gave himself the fatal dose.
The sensational trial included stunning photos of Jackson’s corpse on a hospital gurney and the playing of an audio recording in which a drugged Jackson slurred his words so badly he was barely intelligible.
Jackson reportedly had been unable to sleep without taking drugs while preparing for his “This Is It” concert tour.

JAMES JAMERSON AND THE REAL STORY ABOUT MOTOWN 25
EXCLUSIVE MAA FACEBOOK NEWS AND NOW MAA WEBSITE NEWS: Back when Motown 25 was going on, there was a rumor that Motown's most celebrated musician James Jamerson had to buy a ticket to the event, and sit in the back of the building in the balcony to watch the show. We just found out the true story and you are getting it as an exclusive from the MAA.
First of all... Musician's were hardly ever invited to those events anyway, and even if they were invited it was because another musician suggested the individual should come and play or something of that nature. In Jamerson's case though he was not sent an invitation, he did get in backstage, and he did see a number of his friends and celebrities that he either played with or played for. There was an eye witness that was there and was a part of the entire transaction to this story.
A little known singer by the name of Kenny Koontz (who by the way owns the last recordings of James Jamerson) was with James on that famous day. Koontz was one of James' closest friends during that time period, and Jamerson asked Koontz to go to the arena with him - Koontz agreed. when they were walking to the backstage door, Koontz said "The doors just miraculously opened...LIKE HE WAS THE KING!" He went on to say "I didn't even see anyone open the doors." As Koontz stood in a waiting area Jamerson socialized with the likes of Norman Whitfield (Motown producer and songwriter for the Temptations), and Paul Riser (famed arranger and writer for Motown). "I was so excited to see Jamerson at that show I grabbed him and kissed him on the neck" said Norman Whitfield in a rare MAA 1995 interview.
Jamerson told his comrades about not getting an invitation, and how upset he was about it. James entered the building during the introduction of Marvin Gaye, but there was a problem... Backstage personnel would not let Jamerson's friend Koontz in the event. Jamerson was furious, so he left the event without seeing any of the show! James fingered for Koontz to follow him as he was storming out the back entrance. Koontz asked James what was wrong... Jamerson said "They won't let you in... I don't want to stay." Koontz pleaded for him to stay with his friends, and he will watch the monitors that were available. Jamerson said, "If they won't let my friend in, then I don't want to stay." When we told that story to Annie Jamerson (his widow) she said "That sounds like James, he had a heart of gold."

Don't forget to name your show... then go to "Windows Live Movie Maker" (every computer system has this program, it's free if you have any Windows operating system, it's already on your computer), then edit your movie.
Then put your first show on YouTube!!!! The show has to be no longer than 15 minutes, bam... you got your first show....from then on...just keep creating your shows, make sure your shows always have one name "The Oprah Show", The Ellen Show", The Crazy People's Show" etc... so that everyone can just type in the name and go to the shows. After a while people will be able to type in your name and the only shows that come up will be yours. Make sure that each show has a name
"The Crazy People's Show - Life On The Toilet"
"The Crazy People's Show - Driving My Brother Crazy on Video", etc...
Let's see... how much did that cost....NOTHING!
Once you have created an Youtube account, they allow you to create a website area where you can store all of your video's, and you can direct everyone to that site. You can even design the site a little. Cost nothing!
The more you talk about your productions, the more people will want to go see them. You can do cooking shows, Do It Yourself Shows, Oprah type shows, hang out with your BF (best Friend) shows, Party On The Town Shows, etc...
Youtube is the best means of getting the world to look at you. Make sure that in your "keyword" area you type in words that people use that will cause them to come to your site
{example} "The Crazy People's Show" (The name of your show) should always be the first set of key words with a comma behind it, then words like,
funny show
crazy shows
laugh
fun
crazy, etc...
should be used to draw consumers.
Here is and example of what the free Youtube site can look like:
http://www.youtube.com/user/maainc
Now if you really think this is to easy and you have to pay SOMETHING.
Go to Godaddy.com and get your domain name
{example} "TheCrazyPeoplesShow.com"
for about $11.99 a YEAR ... you can obtain your dot com domain name. You will have to forward your name to the Youtube website, and you do that through Godaddy.com after you purchase the domain name.
So let's summarize ... this entire "be a star" process cost you... YOUR TIME, AND $11.99 A YEAR.
This information is for all of you that think you don't have money or resources to make things happen in your life...stay at home mothers can have their own talk show with their friends... similar to the daytime program "The View", and give your own opinions about things.. you don't have to be an expert to give your opinion.
Geeks in school can have their own shows and interview the popular people and you will become popular with the popular people!
You might like to critique music ... you can have a show to do that.
You might like to talk about what's happening in your neighborhood. You can talk about that. YOU CAN DO ANYTHING!!!
Maybe your kids do crazy stuff all the time...a reality show on them would be excellent (you might drive them crazy after a while....BUT WHO CARES!)
GET CREATIVE AND BE A STAR OVER NIGHT.
....................................

Mel Lewinter joins Sony exec ranks
Longtime Doug Morris associate will be exec vp, label strategy
By CHRISTOPHER MORRIS (Variety)
Continuing to remake Sony Music Entertainment in his own image, chairman-CEO Doug Morris has appointed his longtime associate Mel Lewinter as executive veepee, label strategy. The move was widely anticipated. Lewinter is only the latest top exec to follow Morris from Universal Music Group this year. Former Island Def Jam Music Group chairman-CEO Antonio "L.A." Reid came on board as chairman-CEO of SME's Epic Records (Daily Variety, July 19). For months, industry chatter has said former Motown Records prexy Sylvia Rhone is also destined for an SME post.
Lewinter will be based in New York and reports directly to Morris.
Morris said in a memo to SME employees, "I have worked closely with Mel for many years and have a deep respect for his ability to balance business acumen with artistic vision. He has played an invaluable part in the success of Universal Music, MCA and Warner Music, and his keen insight and knowledge of the music business will be a major asset to our company."
In the same memo, Lewinter said, "Over the years, Doug and I have formed a unique working relationship that is quite instinctive for both of us."
Lewinter has been Morris' loyal right hand for decades. He was most recently chairman-CEO of Universal Motown Republic Group, a title now held by Barry Weiss, who joined the company from SME's Jive Label Group earlier this year.
Previously, Lewinter was vice chairman of MCA Music Entertainment Group, UMG's precursor. During Morris' tenure at Warner Music Group in the '80s and '90s, Lewinter held a variety of titles, including COO of WMG, executive vp of Warner Music U.S. and vice chairman of the Atlantic Group.

Supreme Court Ruling Goes Against ASCAP
REPORTED BY: ALLACCESS.COM
THE SUPREME COURT has handed a victory to online music companies when the nation's highest court "declined to hear an appeal in a case that could have resulted in increased royalties for digital music. The decision let stand a lower court’s ruling that downloading a song does not constitute a 'public performance' of it, clarifying a technical but important distinction about the way songwriters and music publishers are paid," reports THE NEW YORK TIMES.The court's ruling stemmed from a case originally filed by ASCAP in 2007. Publishers are currently paid royalties in one of two ways. Most forms of webcasting and online streaming are treated a form of public performance, therefore a "performance right" fee is assessed.A download is treated differently. It's assessed as a "mechanical reproduction" of a song in a fixed format. That term comes from the days of sheet music, and continues to this day when applied to records and permanent downloads."ASCAP, one of the three major organizations in the U.S. that collect royalties on behalf of publishers, argued that the digital transmission of a download was a public performance, in addition to its being a permanent reproduction," noted THE TIMES. "A federal district court ruled against ASCAP. Last year the U.S. COURT OF APPEALS FOR THE SECOND DISTRICT agreed with the lower court's decision, saying that downloads do not satisfy the conditions for public performance as laid out in THE COPYRIGHT ACT, which states that to perform a work means 'to recite, render, play, dance, or act it.'"ASCAP Pres./Chairman PAUL WILLIAMS released this statement: "ASCAP, on behalf of our 420,000 songwriter, composer and music publisher members,is disappointed that the U.S. SUPREME COURT has chosen not to consider whether a copyrighted musical work is being publicly performed when it is transmitted to a member of the public through an Internet download."Stevie Wonder to Serenade Joseph Lowery SundayThe legendary singer/songwriter is headlining a long list of top local and international performers who will join in the civil rights icon's 90th birthday party, hosted by CNN's Soledad O'Brien.By Janita Poe (cascade.patch.com)

Motown: A Label Of Love

It was 'the sound of young America' that gave voice to the optimism of an era. Motown is about to celebrate its 50th anniversary. Luke Bainbridge visited Detroit for Observer Music Monthly to ask its stars about that golden age, and why the city's dream turned sour
